Ingredients

Servings:
4
  • 1 large cucumber, washed and thinly sliced
  • 0.5 cup fresh mint leaves, gently bruised
  • 8 cup filtered water
  • 0.5 large lemon, thinly sliced (optional)
  • to serve ice cubes (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Wash the cucumber thoroughly. Using a sharp knife or a mandoline, thinly slice the entire cucumber into rounds. For the best flavor release, you can slightly bruise the cucumber slices by gently pressing them with the flat side of your knife.

  2. 2

Gently rinse the fresh mint leaves. To help release their essential oils and aroma, lightly bruise the mint leaves by clapping them between your palms or gently crushing them with a muddler or the back of a spoon. Avoid tearing or chopping them too finely, as small pieces can make the water cloudy.

  3. 3

In a large pitcher (at least 2-quart capacity), combine the sliced cucumber and bruised mint leaves. If using, add the thinly sliced lemon to the pitcher as well.

  4. 4

Pour the 8 cups of filtered water over the cucumber, mint, and lemon (if using) in the pitcher. Stir gently to ensure all ingredients are submerged.

  5. 5

Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld. For a stronger, more pronounced flavor, infuse for 4 to 8 hours, or even overnight. The longer it infuses, the more intense the flavor will be.

  6. 6

Once infused to your liking, remove the cucumber, mint, and lemon slices from the water using a slotted spoon or by straining, especially if you plan to keep the water for more than 24 hours, as prolonged contact can sometimes lead to bitterness from the cucumber skin.

  7. 7

Serve the Refreshing Cucumber Mint Infused Water chilled, over ice if desired. Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint or a thin cucumber slice for an elegant presentation.

Chef's Tips

  • 💡For the best flavor, use organic cucumbers and fresh, vibrant mint. The quality of your ingredients directly impacts the taste of your infused water.
  • 💡Adjust the amount of cucumber and mint to your personal preference. If you like a bolder flavor, add more; for a subtle hint, use less.
  • 💡While infusion for 2-4 hours is good, infusing overnight (6-8 hours) in the refrigerator will yield a more robust and complex flavor profile. Do not infuse for more than 24 hours, as fruits and vegetables can start to break down and affect the taste.
  • 💡Store the infused water in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. For optimal freshness, remove the solid ingredients after 24 hours.
  • 💡Experiment with variations! Add a few slices of ginger for a spicy kick, berries for sweetness, or a sprig of rosemary for an earthy note.

Trouble Coffee Cinnamon Toast

Trouble Coffee Cinnamon Toast

There was once an incredible coffes shop in the Outer Sunset called Trouble Coffee. They had cinnamon bread that was exquisite. This recipe is my humble attempt to recreate the spirit of that iconic cinnamon toast, focusing on a quick toasting method followed by a generous application of softened butter and a simple, aromatic cinnamon, sugar, and cardamom topping. I'm not sure if they used brioche, challah or something else, but I keep hoping I'll run into someone who knows.
