Ingredients

Servings:
4
  • 1 lb ground beef, 80/20
  • 0.5 lb ground pork
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 0.3 cup milk
  • 0.3 cup yellow onion, very finely grated or minced
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.3 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cup beef broth
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 lb pizza dough, store-bought or homemade
  • 2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 0.3 cup lingonberry jam
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. 1

Prepare the Swedish Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, egg, Panko breadcrumbs, milk, grated onion, allspice, nutmeg, 1 teaspoon salt, and 0.5 teaspoon black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

  2. 2

Roll the mixture into small meatballs, about 1-inch in diameter (you should get 30-40 meatballs). Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs in batches until golden brown on all sides and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  3. 3

Prepare the Cream Sauce: In the same skillet (or a clean saucepan), melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter over medium heat. Whisk in 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux.

  4. 4

Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth. Bring to a simmer, then stir in the heavy cream and Dijon mustard. Continue to simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.

  5. 5

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone or steel, place it in the oven while preheating.

  6. 6

On a lightly floured surface, stretch or roll out the pizza dough to your desired thickness and shape (about 12-14 inches in diameter). Carefully transfer the dough to a pizza peel dusted with cornmeal or a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  7. 7

Assemble the pizza: Spread the cream sauce evenly over the pizza dough, leaving a small border for the crust. Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese. Arrange the cooked Swedish meatballs over the cheese, then scatter the thinly sliced red onion.

  8. 8

Bake the pizza for 12-18 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned. Cooking time may vary depending on your oven and pizza thickness.

  9. 9

Remove the pizza from the oven. Garnish with fresh chopped dill. Serve immediately, with small dollops or a drizzle of lingonberry jam on each slice.

Chef's Tips

  • 💡For best results, make sure your oven is fully preheated, especially if using a pizza stone, to achieve a crispy crust.
  • 💡Do not overload the pizza with meatballs or sauce; a balanced amount ensures even cooking and a pleasant texture.
  • 💡Lingonberry jam is essential for the authentic Swedish flavor profile. Don't skip it!
  • 💡You can prepare the meatballs and cream sauce ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days to speed up assembly on pizza night.
