Creamy Herdez Beef and Bean Chili
A rich, comforting beef chili loaded with tender beans, warm spices, and Herdez Salsa Cremosa. The creamy salsa lends a luxurious texture and vibrant, roasted chili flavor in every spoonful.
Ingredients
- •1 lb ground beef (85/15 lean recommended)
- •1 tbsp olive oil
- •1 piece yellow onion (medium, finely diced)
- •3 piece garlic (cloves, minced)
- •1.5 tbsp chili powder
- •1 tsp ground cumin
- •1 tsp smoked paprika
- •1 tsp salt (or to taste)
- •0.5 tsp black pepper
- •14.5 oz fire-roasted diced tomatoes (canned, undrained)
- •15 oz black beans (canned, rinsed and drained)
- •15 oz pinto beans (canned, rinsed and drained)
- •1 cup beef broth (low sodium)
- •0.8 cup Herdez Salsa Cremosa (Chipotle, Jalapeño, or Cilantro Lime flavor; divided)
- •0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese (for serving)
- •0.3 cup fresh cilantro (chopped, for garnish)
Instructions
- 1
Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven or large soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 2
Add ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a wooden spoon and cook until fully browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease if desired.
- 3
Stir in the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper, coating the meat and onions evenly to toast the spices.
- 4
Pour in the diced tomatoes with their juices, rinsed black beans, rinsed pinto beans, beef broth, and 1/2 cup of the Herdez Salsa Cremosa. Stir well to combine.
- 5
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover partially with a lid and let simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until thickened and the flavors meld.
- 6
Remove from heat and stir in the remaining 1/4 cup of Herdez Salsa Cremosa for a fresh, creamy finish. Taste and adjust salt and pepper if needed.
- 7
Ladle into warm bowls and top with shredded cheddar cheese, fresh cilantro, and an extra drizzle of Salsa Cremosa if desired.
Chef's Tips
- 💡Reserving part of the Salsa Cremosa to stir in right at the end preserves its vibrant, creamy texture and punchy flavor.
- 💡If your chili becomes thicker than you like, stir in an extra splash of beef broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
- 💡Serve alongside warm tortilla chips, cornbread, or over a baked potato for a hearty meal.

There was once an incredible coffes shop in the Outer Sunset called Trouble Coffee. They had cinnamon bread that was exquisite. This recipe is my humble attempt to recreate the spirit of that iconic cinnamon toast, focusing on a quick toasting method followed by a generous application of softened butter and a simple, aromatic cinnamon, sugar, and cardamom topping. I'm not sure if they used brioche, challah or something else, but I keep hoping I'll run into someone who knows.
