Warm up with a comforting bowl of Serbian Bean Soup, also known as Serbische Bohnensuppe. This hearty and flavorful soup is made with white beans, fresh vegetables, and aromatic spices, all simmered to perfection in a slow cooker. It’s a perfect dish for a cozy meal at home. If you want to add some meat, you can slice up sausage or use ground sausage and add it in with the carrots and celery.
Ingredients
- 3 cans (15 oz each) white beans (such as cannellini or great northern), drained and rinsed
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 celery stalks, sliced
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, sauté the chopped onion over medium heat until translucent. Transfer to the slow cooker.
- Add the sliced carrots, sliced celery, chopped green pepper, minced garlic, drained and rinsed beans, crushed tomatoes, and broth to the slow cooker.
- Stir in the paprika, marjoram, bay leaf, salt, and pepper.
- Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours, until the vegetables are tender and the flavors are well combined.
- Remove the bay leaf before serving.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
