Ingredients

  • 1.5 cup Basmati Rice (rinsed thoroughly and soaked for 15-20 minutes)
  • 2.5 cup Water
  • 2 tbsp Ghee or Vegetable Oil
  • 1.5 tsp Cumin Seeds (Jeera) (whole)
  • 0.5 piece Onion (small, finely sliced (optional))
  • 1 piece Green Chili (slit lengthwise (optional, for mild heat))
  • 1 tsp Salt (or to taste)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Cilantro (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. 1.

Rinse the basmati rice under cold running water several times until the water runs clear. Soak the rinsed rice in 3 cups of fresh water for 15-20 minutes. After soaking, drain the rice thoroughly and set aside.

    Time: 20 min
  2. 2.

Heat the ghee or vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or a pressure cooker over medium heat. Once hot, add the whole cumin seeds. Let them sizzle and turn fragrant, about 30-60 seconds. Be careful not to burn them.

    Time: 1 min
  3. 3.

If using, add the finely sliced onion and green chili to the pot. Sauté until the onion turns translucent, about 3-5 minutes.

    Time: 5 min
  4. 4.

Add the drained basmati rice to the pot. Gently stir for about 1-2 minutes to coat the rice grains with the ghee and cumin. This helps prevent sticking and enhances the flavor.

    Time: 2 min
  5. 5.

Pour in the 2.5 cups of water and add the salt. Stir gently once to combine. Bring the water to a rolling boil.

    Time: 3 min
  6. 6.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot tightly with a lid, and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.

    Time: 15 min
  7. 7.

After 15 minutes, turn off the heat but keep the pot covered for another 5-10 minutes. This allows the rice to steam and become perfectly fluffy.

    Time: 5 min
  8. 8.

Remove the lid, gently fluff the rice with a fork, and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro before serving.

    Time: 1 min

Tips

  • 💡Soaking the rice is crucial for fluffy, long grains and reduces cooking time.
  • 💡Do not stir the rice too much while it's cooking, as this can break the grains.
  • 💡For extra richness, a pinch of garam masala can be added along with the rice in step 4, but traditionally, Jeera Rice is kept simple to let the cumin shine.
