Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup whole milk (or any milk of your choice)
- 2 tablespoons loose black tea (or 2 black tea bags)
- 2-3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
- 4 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 4-6 whole black peppercorns
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 3-4 whole cloves
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced or grated
- Optional: 1 star anise, 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds
Instructions
- In a saucepan, add water, cardamom pods, peppercorns, cinnamon stick, cloves, ginger, and any optional spices you like.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes to let the spices infuse.
- Add the loose black tea (or tea bags) to the pan. Simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
- Pour in the milk and add sugar. Stir well and bring the mixture back to a gentle boil.
- Allow the chai to simmer for 2-3 more minutes, watching carefully so it doesn’t boil over.
- Strain the chai into cups using a fine mesh strainer.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
Tip: Adjust the amount of spices and sugar to your taste. For a vegan version, use plant-based milk.
